An Autumnal Mood
It was mid October 2022 when I went up to my favourite place to spend a weekend taking in the fall colour and exploring the corridor between Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie. On this visit I went a bit further west of the Soo to Batchewana Bay, located on the north east shore of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world.
I'd read many descriptions of the north shore by notable Canadian authors and seen first hand many paintings of its moods. Sometimes it's almost better if we have no prior knowledge of a new experience, place, person before arriving as this keeps expectations at bay.I'd already visited Lake Superior Provincial Park in 2018, specifically the petroglyph trail. I was alone on that trail in the early light of the day. A peculiar staircase formed by rocks led down into a quiet earthen glen of large mossy rocks and trees with clumps of lichen floating down from branches like soft feathers. I actually expected to have a fairy appear in front of me, alight on wings of silk. But no, it was just the dance of the morning light through the forest canopy.
And now here I was in autumn exploring the north shore, a very different vista but equally magical. That day saw clouds rolling in and out creating a wild display of cloud formations over the vastness of Lake Superior. Off in the distance rain streamed down in a misty hazy partially obscuring the land form just beyond the rain. Then the light broke through a section on the cloud cover and lit up the drops of rain creating a magical effect.
I took a dozen or more photos of the scene at various angles. Spanning the horizon before me as I couldn't fit it all in with one photo. As I continued to record the event I also watched as the players in the scene moved past and through each other like sheep in a field. I wanted to stay all day, or at least until the light faded away. But then I remembered I had a long drive back so I gathered myself up and after taking one long last look drove back.
I'd like to return this month however it may not be possible. So instead I'm working on this series, one that I'd intended to complete after my visit to Lake Superior that weekend in 2022. My intention of the series is to recapture those feelings, sights, sounds and smells I experienced. And especially the sky and clouds and their relationship to the water.
The series will be shown first to my subscribers. And then later released to the public on my website and social media.
Please subscribe to my newsletter if you'd like to be part of the first viewing.
I am truly excited for this series. It's everything I'd hoped to express about my experiences with Lake Superior and I believe truly captures the autumnal mood.
